Lawyers want 'snitch' out of client's jail cell
The Associated Press
SOMERSET, Ky. Attorneys for the man accused of killing Pulaski County Sheriff Sam Catron believe authorities may have placed a snitch in the cell with their client in an attempt to gather information against him.
Attorneys Mark Stanziano and Kathryn Wood asked that the man be moved out of the cell, away from their client, Danny Shelley, 30, of Eubank.
Mr. Shelley is charged with murder in the April 13 sniper slaying of Sheriff Catron, who was killed outside a rural fire station where he'd been campaigning for re-election.
Jeff Morris, 35, a former deputy who was running against Sheriff Catron, and Kenneth Fingers White, 54, an alleged drug dealer who was backing Mr. Morris, are charged with plotting with Mr. Shelley to kill the sheriff. The three have pleaded innocent.
Mr. Shelley's attorneys said Tony Chaney, a known commonwealth's snitch, has shared a cell with Mr. Shelley and has tried to get the accused killer to discuss the case.
Mr. Shelley has refused to talk to Mr. Chaney, but it's likely the informant will try to gain favor with authorities and lighten his jail time by making up stories and attributing them to Mr. Shelley, the attorneys said.
Mr. Chaney, 27, has a record for receiving stolen property. He is being held for failing to appear at his sentencing this year after pleading guilty to theft.
