Miami Twp. monitoring liquor sales
'Underage buyers' part of sting

The Cincinnati Enquirer
MIAMI TOWNSHIP The police department in this Clermont County community will be conducting undercover operations next week to target convenience stores, groceries and other liquor establishments that might sell alcohol to underage buyers.
The police will use volunteers between the ages of 18 and 20 to enter the 40-some establishments with liquor licenses in the township and attempt to buy alcoholic beverages.
Lt. Steve Rogers said they try to visit every establishment with a liquor license so that all are treated fairly and no one is singled out.
He said police have recruited about four volunteers. If asked for identification, the volunteers will say they don't have any. If they are still able to purchase alcohol, the seller will be cited by officers waiting outside, Lt. Rogers said. The misdemeanor charge carries a $500 fine.
Police Chief Steven Bailey said the department tries to do this each year before the start of prom season.
Our experience tells us that young people going to proms sometimes succumb to the moment, and peer pressure, said Chief Bailey. We want to eliminate that possibility and help everyone have a good time while being safe.
Lt. Rogers said they have done this the past three years.
They typically cite about six establishments each time, Lt. Rogers said.
