Golf Tip from Jim Thorpe
Irons best chipping choice for most amateurs
This week: Jim Thorpe, who played on the PGA Tour from 1976-98 and last week won the Countrywide Tradition, a Senior Tour major, talks about chipping.
For most professionals, when we miss the green we can use a wedge. But for 90 percent of amateurs, a 6-, 7- or 8-iron is the best choice to chip the ball onto the green. There are three main steps I take:
No.1: I choose the club I want to use, depending on how far I am from the green. This club will make the ball hit the green and roll.
No.2: I grip the club very, very lightly in my hands.
No.3: I use a nice short stroke, like a putt. This enables me to keep control over the ball.
