Tornado reminders issued
In Warren County's Deerfield Township, an outdoor warning system is ready to alert people to tornadoes, said Fire Rescue Chief Bill Kramer.
Three years ago, a serious tornado ripped through the area, and Deerfield Township received significant damage to dozens of homes and businesses, he said.
Fortunately, there were no fatalities, and the township trustees installed an outdoor warning system in time for the tornado season of 2000, he said.
Sirens are at:
Cottell Park, Snider and Irwin-Simpson roads.
Waterstone Boulevard.
Loveland Park, Rich and Davis roads.
Fire Station 58, Columbia and Kings Mills roads.
Landen-Deerfield Park, U.S. 22 and Ohio 3.
Chief Kramer said the sirens will be sounded if a tornado or high winds approach.
The chief advises residents to take cover in a basement or, if outdoors, in a recessed area, such as a drainage ditch. Turn on the radio for information.
Another wise move is to develop a family crisis communication plan and collect disaster supplies, said William Ray Turner, director of the Butler County Emergency Management Agency.
The entire family needs to sit down and go through different possible scenarios and discuss fears and concerns and options, he said.
He suggests that families store three days' worth of drinking water and noncooked food dried fruits and nuts, canned goods, peanut butter and crackers.
