ZANESVILLE, Ohio — A 14-month-old boy survived a 30-foot fall down an elevator shaft and got away with only cuts and bruises.

        Bryant Scott was in fair condition Sunday at Children's Hospital in Columbus with no broken bones, hospital spokeswoman Pam Barber said. The boy's mother, Danelle Scott of Crooksville, declined to comment, Ms. Barber said.

        The boy's mother and two friends were in an abandoned downtown department store and office building about 7:30 p.m. Saturday when the toddler broke away and started running, Zanesville Police Officer Andy Armstrong said.

        Before his mother could catch him, he fell down the shaft from the third floor to the first. The adults pulled him from the shaft before rescue crews arrived, Assistant Fire Chief Craig Stemm said.

        The woman told police that the person who rents the third-floor space gave them permission to sort through old furniture and other items there, Officer Armstrong said.
