Youth suspected in downtown robbery

        Two suspects — including a 10-to-11-year-old boy — were being sought Saturday night in the armed robbery of a valet near Jeff Ruby's Steak House, downtown, about 10:15 p.m.

        Cincinnati police say the two fit the description of suspects in at least two similar robberies in that area in the past week.

        Saturday's robbery occurred in an alley between Seventh and Eighth streets, off Walnut.

        Restaurateur Jeff Ruby said the valet was a new employee at the Aronoff Center. He said the suspects struck the valet and took his money.

        One suspect is described as male, 18-19 years old, 6-foot-5, with a goatee and wearing a black shirt and baggie pants. The child is described as 4-foot-10, 100 pounds and wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.

        The older suspect was carrying what appeared to be an automatic pistol, police said. No other details were available.
       

Juvenile charged in plot to kill police chief

        HAMILTON — A Juvenile Court judge ruled Friday that prosecutors can proceed with charges alleging that a 16-year-old boy plotted with two companions to kill a village police chief.

        Judge David Niehaus of Butler County Juvenile Court ruled there is probable cause to proceed with charges against the Hamilton teen.

        All three are accused of plotting to kill New Miami village police chief Duane Pelfrey, who was not harmed.
       

Police open houses scheduled this week

        As part of Police Memorial Week, each district in the Cincinnati Police Department will hold an open house. The public is invited to meet police officers, review police equipment and operations and attend demonstrations by K-9, SWAT, Mounted Patrol, Underwater Search and Recovery and Crime Scene units.

        The open houses will be 9 a.m.-1 p.m. each day.

        The schedule:

        • Monday, District 2, 3295 Erie Ave.

        • Tuesday, District 3, 3201 Warsaw Ave.

        • Wednesday, District 4, 4150 Reading Road.

        • Thursday, District 5, 1012 Ludlow Ave.

        • Friday, District 1, 310 Ezzard Charles Drive.

        Police Memorial Day services will be noon Friday on Fountain Square, followed immediately by the annual parade.
       

Police investigating Walnut Hills robbery

        Police are looking for two people who kicked open a locked door early Saturday, fired a shot and stole a woman's purse out of a Walnut Hills home.

        District 4 received a report of a home invasion at 12:50 a.m. in the 2400 block of Kenton St. A shot was fired down a hallway during the robbery, but no one was injured. The suspects were last seen running from the home.
       

Healthcare job fair scheduled for Monday

        The Cincinnati Enquirer is hosting a Healthcare Job Fair and Career Day, Monday at the Marriott Kingsgate Conference Hotel, 151 Goodman Drive, Corryville.

        More than 65 local, regional and national hospitals and healthcare organizations will be represented.

        Positions available include nurses, pharmacists, technicians, billers, coders and speech therapists.

        Interviewing hours are 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2-7 p.m.

Man injured after falling from tree

        MONROE — A man was in fair condition at a Dayton, Ohio, hospital Saturday after falling 15 to 20 feet out of a tree he was trimming.

        Michael Shelton was flown by helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital shortly after 11 a.m. from a home in the 4600 block of Yankee Road, according to emergency workers and hospital officials.
       

Volunteers needed for Cincinnati parks

        Volunteers are needed to help in Cincinnati parks during Green Up Day 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Participants will prepare the parks for the summer season by planting, mulching and pruning. Volunteers will receive a free T-shirt and refreshments.

        The event will take place rain or shine at the following parks: Ault Park, Eden Park, Magrish Preserve, Martin Luther King Park, Mount Airy Forest, Rapid Run Park, Seasongood Square and Stanbery Park. Information: 861-8970 Ext. 26.
       

AFL-CIO hosts talk on retirement savings

        The Cincinnati AFL-CIO will present a discussion on retirement savings titled, “Enron: Could It Happen to You?” 7 p.m. Tuesday at Xavier University's Cintas Center.

        The meeting will feature a panel discussion by former Enron workers and Patricia Friend, president of the Association of Flight Attendants.

        Former Cincinnati Mayor Jerry Springer will moderate.
       

Henderson retires as university president

        WILBERFORCE, Ohio — John L. Henderson is retiring as president of Wilberforce University.

        Mr. Henderson announced his retirement on Saturday at the school's commencement ceremony.

        Mr. Henderson, 70, was appointed to the presidency of the nation's oldest, historically black private university in 1988.

        The university, which is affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church, traces its roots to 1856, when the area was a destination for slaves traveling the Ohio Underground Railroad. Its first students were freed blacks and slaves.
