The Associated Press
WILBERFORCE, Ohio John L. Henderson is retiring as president of Wilberforce University.
Henderson announced his retirement on Saturday at the school's commencement ceremony. A formal announcement will be made Monday.
Henderson, 70, was appointed to the presidency of the nation's oldest, historically black private university in 1988.
The university, which is affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church, traces its roots to 1856, when the area was a destination for slaves traveling the Ohio Underground Railroad. Its first students were freed blacks and slaves.
