For National Teacher Day, the Cheviot Elementary School, 4040 Harrison Ave., Cheviot, presented its Gallery of Assignments, a display of teacher assignments with the scoring guide used to grade students' work. The gallery was there for public view.
Maria N. Bonavita, principal, said the standards in practice, a process developed over the last three years, establishes guidelines for grading a student with the student participating in the process.
It is the first of its kind in the history of Cincinnati Public Schools.
Cheviot Schools believes this can become a benchmark to raise the bar within the Cincinnati Public Schools, Ms. Bonavita said.
The assignments reflect the grade and content level being taught. Student work is required to have a score of 4, 3, 2 or 1 with a note from the teacher explaining how the score could have been higher. Scoring guides were made with help from students and videos were shown to visitors, demonstrating teamwork between teacher and student in the classroom.
More than $7,000, raised from a golf benefit will be used to help underinsured or uninsured families pay for hospice nursing care, support the services of home care aides and volunteers, and help cover transportation costs for patients of Hospice of Northern Kentucky.
The money was raised from the agency's golf benefit at Eagle Creek Country Club in Crittenden, Ky., last month.
More than 80 golfers played in the scramble.
This money will go to our services in Grant County, said Carol Skawinski, community resource coordinator of Hospice of Northern Kentucky. We have another golf benefit outing, set for July 29 at Triple Crown (Union, Ky.) and money from that outing will benefit our services in all six counties.
Hospice of Northern Kentucky serves families in Boone, Campbell, Carroll, Gallatin, Grant and Kenton counties, she said.
Dick Von Hoene, host of ICN6's Northern Kentucky Magazine, (formerly television character Cool Ghoul) will play in the golf outing.
The event will be from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The Silverton Neighborhood Block Watch Association will conduct a yard sale, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 18 to raise money for the Silverton and Deer Park Joint Fire District purchase of a heat sensor thermal imaging camera.
There will be 63 booths at the sale along with food, music, raffles, split the pot and a clown.
The camera can help firefighters locate people trapped in dark, smokey buildings, and can be used to trace hot spots in walls and behind other obstacles.
