These boys cooked, camped, made ropes, tied knots, built signal towers and showed they can take care of themselves in an unfriendly environment. They demonstrated their skills Saturday at the annual Boy Scout Family Jamboree at Coney Island.
It went well. The kids had a wonderful time, said Bob Wylly of West Chester, program chairman for the 12-county Dan Beard Coun cil. We had 8,000-10,000 people attend, probably two-thirds of them scouts.
The jamboree's purpose is to allow scouts to demonstrate what they have learned, said Matt Eisenbraun, event spokesman.
Scouts enjoy the opportunity to showcase what they are, to let people know how they can join, Mr. Wylly added. It's a thrill for the kids to demonstrate what they can do.
