Buckeyes split with Gophers


Ohio State 13, Minnesota 3, Game 1; Minnesota 4, Ohio State 0, Game 2

        COLUMBUS, Ohio — Doug Deeds hit a 3-run homer in a 10-run fourth inning as Ohio State beat Minnesota 13-3 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.

        The Buckeyes (32-17, 17-10 Big Ten) used seven hits and a Minnesota error to score 10 runs in the fourth. Five of the runs were unearned, coming after a fielding error with one out.

        E.J. Laratta (7-4) got the win for Ohio State, giving up three runs on four hits. Craig Molldrem (5-4) took the loss, allowing eight runs on 10 hits.

        In the second game, Jeremy Beaulieu hit an RBI triple and C.J. Woodrow struck out seven in five innings as the Gophers (29-23, 17-9 Big Ten) won 4-0.

        Minnesota got two runs in the second. Scott Welch singled, advanced to second on a balk and went to third on a groundout. Beaulieu tripled, scoring Welch, and then scored on a single by David Roach.

        Woodrow (8-4) got the win, allowing no runs on five hits. Josh Newman (8-5) took the loss, allowing four runs, all earned, on 11 hits and three walks.
