Ohio State to play Marshall in 2004
The Associated Press
COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio State will play Marshall in Columbus during the 2004 football season, Ohio State announced Saturday.
The Mid-American Conference Thundering Herd will meet the Buckeyes for the first time on Sept. 11, 2004, at Ohio Stadium.
The Buckeyes were scheduled to play San Jose State on that date in Columbus, but the Spartans asked to be released from their contract, Ohio State athletic director Andy Geiger said.
We feel extremely fortunate to be able to add a team of Marshall's caliber to our schedule at such a late date, Geiger said. This should be a good game for both schools, especially given the proximity of Marshall.
This will be the second game that the Huntington, W.Va., team will play against a Big Ten team. Marshall lost 34-24 to Michigan State in 2000 and is scheduled to play Wisconsin in 2007.
The Buckeyes are 17-1 against MAC schools, including a 28-14 win over Akron last season. Ohio State plays Kent State this fall, Bowling Green in 2003 and Miami in 2005.
Buckeye coach Jim Tressel was 2-3 against Marshall at Youngstown State.
