Petitions address airport name

By Steve Kemme skemme@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

HAMILTON — The son of one of the four Hogan brothers who founded and developed the Butler County Regional Airport presented petitions with 1,787 signatures to the county commissioners Monday, asking that “Hogan Field” be added to the airport's name.

“The Hogan brothers donated their time, finances and effort into developing this airport,” said Cliff Hogan, son of Art Hogan, one of the four brothers.

The Hogan family and their supporters have been fighting for three years to add the Hogan name to the airport. Twelve family members and supporters showed up at Monday's commissioners' meeting.

Cliff Hogan, wearing a T-shirt that said “Hogan Field. Ask Any Pilot,” and others at the meeting became angry when the commissioners said they do not want to change the airport's name at this time.

The commissioners have said that adding “Hogan Field” could detract from the impact of the county name in Butler's efforts to attract new businesses to Butler.

Commissioner Courtney Combs said they had offered to name the new airport terminal that will be opened today after the Hogans, but the Hogan family didn't want that.

“We have no problem with honoring the Hogans and their contributions,” he said. “But the only thing that will satisfy the Hogan family is to name the airport after them.”

The county plans to have a display inside the terminal that tells about the Hogan brothers' role in the airport's history.

The four brothers, Joe, Bernie, Art and Bill Hogan, began developing the airport in 1932 and sold it to the county in 1984. The brothers, who are deceased, continued operating it until 1989.

The commissioners left open the possibility that some day “Hogan Field” might be added to the airport's name.

“The fact that it doesn't happen today isn't fatal to your cause,” Commissioner Mike Fox said.
