Traffic, businesses affected
The fire Tuesday at Odd Fellows Hall continues to cause road and business closures.
Fifth Street from Russell Street to Scott Boulevard and Madison Avenue from Fourth to Sixth streets will be closed for at least a week, according to Covington city officials.
An Internal Revenue Service office in the Marx Building on Madison Avenue will remain closed today. The 200 employees who work in the office process specialized tax claims and study economic trends from tax returns from prior years. Other IRS operations in Covington will remain open.
William Weathers, spokesman for Covington Independent Public Schools, said the plan is to reopen Two Rivers Middle School and Holmes Alternative School today. Both were closed Tuesday because of power outages.
It was unclear if the federal courthouse on Fifth Street would reopen today. The courthouse was closed Tuesday, also because of the power outage.
Other small businesses near the hall, including a barber shop and a meat market, will remain closed because of the immediate threat of the building collapsing.
Electricity and phone service, which was temporaryly knocked out to most of downtown Covington on Tuesday morning, should be restored by today.
