Golf tip from Gary McCord

Chipping key: Don't lift

You've probably heard Senior PGA Tour player Gary McCord as a color analyst for CBS during PGA Tour events, but he also has caught fans' attention with his golf swing. McCord shares his best advice for chipping around the green:

All my buddies at home can't hit it a lick. They are lucky if they hit two or three greens a round, and they end up having to chip to the green all the time. Every time they chip, they try to make a shot I call “the forklift.” They try to lift the ball instead of taking a regular swing and letting the angle of the club face do the work.

You don't want your front wrist to swing like a pendulum. That is what causes the lift. Here are a few tips if this is a problem area of your golf game:

First, get a very expensive watch so it looks good when attempting this shot. Then get a pen and place it under the watch against your front wrist. Practice chipping with the pen in place and your wrist will not be able to bend. Just keep your head down, hit down at the ball, hit through the ball and let the club do the work.

If you can master this technique, your game will improve, you'll have a nice watch, and you'll have a new pen, too.
