More suits filed against archdiocese

LOUISVILLE Seven men and one woman filed lawsuits Thursday against the Archdiocese of Louisville, claiming they were sexually abused by priests when they were children. Two of the plaintiffs claim they were abused by two different priests.
The lawsuits filed Thursday in Jefferson County Circuit Court bring to 96 the total number of suits against the Archdiocese of Louisville since April 19. None of the priests are named as defendants.
The plaintiffs claim the archdiocese was aware of the sexual misconduct, but did not take appropriate disciplinary action.
Four of the priests named in the latest suits the Rev. Louis E. Miller, the Rev. Thomas P. Creagh, the Rev. Daniel C. Clark and the Rev. James Hargadon have previously been accused of sexual misconduct in prior suits. One suit accuses the Rev. Robert Gray of abuse. Father Gray is retired but continues to assist during Mass at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church.
Father Miller, who has been named in nearly half the suits, retired in March amid recent allegations.
He is living in a retirement home for priests in Louisville. He has denied all allegations. Earlier this month, Father Creagh resigned from his parish after being accused. Father Clark is living in a monastery and Father Hargadon is the pastor at St. Patrick's.
In a suit filed Thursday, James R. Sullivan Sr. accuses both Father Miller and Father Gray of sexual abuse in 1981 and 1982. Mr. Sullivan, who was 10 and 11 years old at the time, said Father Gray sexually molested him while he was pastor at St. Vincent DePaul, according to the suit. Mr. Sullivan says Father Miller abused him after he reported the alleged abuse by Father Gray. Father Miller was Mr. Sullivan's Boy Scout leader.
