COVINGTON In Independence, where 13 candidates crowded the ballot in the fast-growing Kenton County city, Maura Snyder was eliminated in Tuesday's primary.
The 12 remaining candidates will vie for six council seats in the Nov. 5 election. Council terms run for two years.
We've grown so much in the residential areas that we have a lot of new people who've taken an interest in politics, said Independence City Clerk Pat Taney.
We have about 25 to 27 subdivisions going up.
The 2000 census put the city's population at 14,982, a 43.5% increase from 1990.
This fall, candidates for Independence City Council will be incumbents James Jim Ellison and Jim Bushong and challengers Otis Ketron, Rita A. King, Jerry Rogers, Mary Pat Behler, Richard Noah, Dwight Myers, Barbara Giles Gabbard, Donna Yeager, Robert Dod son and Carol Franzen.
Mrs. Gabbard and Ms. Yeager are former members of Independence City Council. Mrs. Gabbard is a former two-term council member who has been involved in her community for years.
Ms. Yeager, the top vote-getter Tuesday, also has been on the Independence Recreation Committee, and she played a key role in getting the senior citizens center that opened in Independence three months ago.
Ms. Behler, Mr. Noah and Mr. Myers are on the Independence Board of Ethics, and Mr. Dodson served several years ago on Independence Tomorrow, a planning committee.
The general election also will feature current council members Chris Moriconi and Isaac Ike Gabbard, Mrs. Gabbard's husband, seeking a four-year term for Independence mayor. First-term Mayor Tom Kriege is not seeking re-election.
