NEWPORT A local city commissioner beat an incumbent with more than 20 years in office for a chance at a seat on Campbell Fiscal Court.
Newport Commissioner Ken Rechtin won 60.9 percent of the vote, or 2,176 votes, defeating four-term county incumbent Roland Vories in the 3rd District Democratic primary Tuesday.
Mr. Vories won 39 percent of the vote, or 1,395 votes.
Mr. Rechtin will face Republican Terry Rascher in November.
I'm humbled, gratified and excited, Mr. Rechtin said.
Newport, in the last decade, has attracted development that includes the Newport Aquarium, the $215 million Newport on the Levee entertainment complex and the first U.S. location for branch of Germany's famed Hofbrauhaus beer garden and restaurant. Rehab of residential properties in Newport has also been on the rise.
Mr. Rechtin, who works in marketing at Fifth Third Bank, has been a Newport commissioner for nine years. He said he first thought about running for the county seat four years ago.
Mr. Rechtin said the county and cities should cooperate more on a wide range of issues.
They're beginning to discuss cooperating on recreation issues, Mr. Rechtin said. We should be cooperating in numerous areas in all public safety issues, finance and administration, in economic development. I see good possibilities; I'm not sure where it goes.
In the 1st District, Lloyd Rogers beat Mark Stoeber by 0.9 percentage point in the Republican primary.
Mr. Rogers will face incumbent Bill Verst in November.
