Moments after being splashed with bleach on Jan. 28, Archie Dale Hall began experiencing breathing problems.
According to testimony Tuesday from a Cincinnati firefighter who responded to a 911 call for help, the 39-year-old Avondale man had to be assisted to an ambulance. He was rushed to University Hospital.
He was in obvious respiratory distress, said Lt. William Neal. He was laying on his back. His eyes were red. He was breathing heavily and he had low blood oxygen .... He wasn't able to talk well and we couldn't get a lot of information from him.
Mr. Hall lost consciousness at the hospital and died after three weeks on a respirator.
His 15-year-old daughter, who was 14 at the time, is accused of causing her father's death. On Tuesday, she became the first Ohio child to receive a jury trial in Juvenile Court.
Charged with involuntary manslaughter and felonious assault, the teen has been classified as a serious youthful offender and if convicted could face a sentence that might keep her behind bars well into adulthood.
The prosecution contends that the teen, who is not being named because of her age, intentionally threw bleach on her father during an argument over her 17-year-old boyfriend, Gregory Douglas of Westwood.
Mr. Hall's daughter had been washing clothes and had a bottle of open bleach in her hands during their argument. At some point the bleach was splashed and both Mr. Hall and the girl were doused.
Prosecutors say Mr. Hall died as a result of bleach inhalation.
Mr. Douglas is charged as an adult in the incident with aggravated assault. He is accused of placing Mr. Hall in a chokehold. He has not been indicted.
The defense contends the bleach was tossed accidentally and that the girl did not intend to kill her father.
The case will resume today at 9 a.m. before Hamilton County Juvenile Court Judge Sylvia Sieve Hendon.
