Weinberg claims win over Barlow
The Associated Press
LOUISVILLE Lois Combs Weinberg, daughter of a Kentucky governor, claimed victory Tuesday against an ex-congressman in the Democratic U.S. Senate primary.
Her opponent, former U.S. Rep. Tom Barlow, said Ms. Weinberg's victory claim was premature and he did not immediately concede.
Ms. Weinberg clung to a razor-thin lead against Mr. Barlow with almost all the votes counted, but the race remained too close to call in a dramatic ending to a low-key campaign.
This win proves the voters of Kentucky are ready for something new, Ms. Weinberg told The Associated Press late Tuesday.
The candidates were separated by only a couple thousand votes out of the nearly 500,000 cast.
With all precincts reporting, Ms. Weinberg had 231,060 votes to 229,060 for Mr. Barlow.
