Blood drive fails to fix donor shortage

Tristate residents have been slow to roll up their sleeves for an emergency blood drive called by Hoxworth Blood Center.
In fact, the shortage is getting worse because the increased numbers of donations still aren't reaching what Hoxworth needs to collect on a normal day.
Hoxworth declared an emergency blood appeal Tuesday. Normally, the blood bank needs to collect 325 units a day. In past emergency appeals, as many as 400 to 500 donors give per day.
But on Tuesday, Hoxworth collected 316 units and on Wednesday it collected 319.
The Tristate blood supply is 361 units low and could fall to 500 units low by Monday if donations don't start picking up, Hoxworth spokesman Michael Anderson said.
To donate blood at one of Hoxworth's neighborhood centers, call (513) 451-0910 or (800) 830-1091 to schedule an appointment. People also can give at one of four blood drives scheduled through June 7.
Those drives are:
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World.
Noon to 6 p.m. Monday at the Kroger store in Forest Hills.
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 7 at Coney Island amusement park.
Noon to 6 p.m. June 7 at the Hyde Park Kroger.
