Western schedules news conference with Marcus
The Associated Press
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. Western Kentucky center Chris Marcus and coach Dennis Felton were holding a news conference Friday to make a major announcement, but whether it means Marcus will return for another season was not revealed.
That will be what you have to wait for, his mother, Louisville Marcus, told The Courier-Journal of Louisville from her home in Charlotte, N.C., Thursday night. Right now, I'm waiting just like you.
The 7-foot-1 player applied for the National Basketball Association draft but has not signed with an agent. He can withdraw his name from consideration by June 19.
He said in January he was ready to finish school and start a new chapter in his life.
But he missed two months with a stress fracture in his right foot and played in just 15 games, averaging 15.9 points and 8.9 rebounds.
Marcus played only one season of high school basketball. He came to Western as a partial qualifier and sat out his freshman season. NCAA rules allow a player to earn that year back if they graduate within four years. Marcus took 20 credit hours last semester to ensure that he received his bachelor's degree in sociology in May.
Western will be trying for a third straight Sun Belt Conference title and NCAA tournament bid next season. If Marcus returns, it would give the Hilltoppers all but one starter back from a team that went 28-4 last season.
