Pick of the Pots

Cincinnati Blooms

Artist-decorated and professionally planted flower pots and planters, part of “Cincinnati Blooms,” will be in downtown Cincinnati, Newport and Covington through September. Complete information at Cincinnati.Com/flowerpower.

        Title: We Dig Downtown.

        Type of pot: Urn

map
Pot's location: Fountain Square (probably will be moved later in summer).

Artist: Mark Eberhard of Terrace Park, whose usual medium is oil and acrylic on Masonite. Mr. Eberhard is featured artist in the June issue of Southwest Art Magazine.

Explanation: The artist and representatives of Firstar, the pot's sponsor, played off the 1970s' song “We Can Dig It.” “We're hoping we can get the song playing from the pig,” Mr. Eberhard says. The team, which also did a Big Pig Gig pig, wanted to say something positive about downtown, the artist says.

Who planted it: Julie Weinel, horticulture manager for the Cincinnati Horticultural Society. The Persian shield, with iridescent foliage, and lime-colored coleus “Pineapple” complement the pot's colors, she says. Other plants: lantana “Pink Caprice,” amoranth “Globe,” geranium “Maverick Star” and Swedish ivy.

        Sponsor: Firstar.
