Artist: Holly Schapker of Hyde Park whose studio is in a 140-year-old Over-the-Rhine building renovated by her and her husband. The oil painter, whose work is sold exclusively through Closson's, specializes in florals and landscapes.
Explanation: Jackie Reau of the Cincinnati Art Museum asked if I'd be interested in painting a pot for the museum, so I had my sponsor before my design. I wanted to use one of the many world-renowned paintings in the Cincinnati Art Museum collection ... and since the museum is building a new wing to display local artists' work, I thought it would be a good idea to paint a pot dedicated to one of my favorite local artists, John Henry Twachtman (1853-1902). One of his most famous paintings, Springtime, is in the museum. It seemed perfect for the Flower Power project.
Who planted it: Julie Weinel, horticulture manager for the Cincinnati Horticultural Society. She chose million bells Cherry, Argyranthemum Primrose Petite, licorice, zinnias Profusion and celosia plants that will stand up to full-sun conditions at the CAM.
Sponsor: CAM's Women's Committee.
Artist-decorated and professionally planted flower pots and planters, part of Cincinnati Blooms, will be in downtown Cincinnati, Newport and Covington through September. Information at Cincinnati.Com.
