Lombardo tribute tonight

The “sweetest music this side of heaven” fills the air today when Dusty Rhodes celebrates the birthday of bandleader Guy Lombardo.

The Hamilton County auditor, and part-time DJ, plays a five-hour tribute to the Mr. Lombardo and his Royal Canadians orchestra 7 p.m.-midnight on WMKV-FM (89.3).

“I could have done 12 hours straight and not repeated a song,” says Mr. Rhodes, who met Mr. Lombardo in the late 1950s while working at WOLF-AM in Syracuse, N.Y.

Mr. Rhodes will play “all his biggest hits in order” starting with “Charmaine” in 1927, and ending with “Auld Lang Syne” (of course). Mr. Lombardo was born June 19, 1902, in Ontario. He died in 1977.

— John Kiesewetter
