German-Americans get kick out of World Cup

WEST CHESTER TWP. — It doesn't matter to George Fraundorfer who wins the United States vs. Germany World Cup quarterfinal.

The German-born restaurateur says he'll be on the winning side either way.

The 67-year-old owner of Black Forest Restaurant and Lounge in West Chester will show the game on a big screen as his customers eat a hearty breakfast of eggs, German sausage and fries, with Dutch coffee and orange juice to wash it down. The game begins at 7:25 a.m. Friday.

“I talked with my brother in Germany, and I told him that I have a dilemma,” said Mr. Fraundorfer, who has lived in the United States for 46 years. “I have the United States and Germany playing against each other, and I don't know who to root for. He said: "You are lucky; you won't have a loser.'”

Mr. Fraundorfer's brother, Sepp, owns a restaurant in Germany and also will have the game on a big screen for his patrons during what will be the afternoon there.

“I've been rooting for the U.S. and I'm amazed they've done this well,” said Mr. Fraundorfer, who has owned his restaurant for 38 years.

Friday's game is especially relevant for many fans in Greater Cincinnati, home to about 592,000 people of German descent. Greater Cincinnati is 29.9 percent German-American, third-highest of metropolitan areas in the country, according to U.S. Census figures.

Black Forest won't be the only German restaurant making provisions for hungry soccer fans. Lenhardt's and Christy's in Clifton Heights will serve eggs and goetta starting at 6:30 a.m. Owner Christy Windholtz is expecting a big crowd.

“I can't believe how far the U.S. has gone,” said Ms. Windholtz. “It is amazing to see people waking up in the middle of the night to watch the games.”
