Student wins gold at festival
A Princeton High School student brought back a gold medal from the inaugural USA Basketball Women's Youth Development Festival held in Colorado Springs last weekend.
Deonna Davis, 17, a point guard on the Princeton High School girls basketball team, was among 48 top high school juniors around the country selected by the USA Basketball Women's and Cadet Youth Committee to play in the festival.
Ms. Davis played on the team in the North Region which went 5-0 in the festival, knocking off the South team, 84-80, in overtime to win.
The games were played at the U.S. Olympic Training Center under international basketball rules. Players were divided into four regional teams: north, south, east and west.
This was one of the biggest accomplishments in my basketball career, Ms. Davis said. It felt even bigger when I brought home the gold medal. I had fun, playing with the top (high school junior) players in the country.
She added another star to her crown Monday when her AAU team won first place in the All-Ohio Basketball Tournament at Wilmington College.
Ms. Davis helped lead the Princeton Lady Vikings to a 14-8 record in the 2001-2002 season, averaging 11.7 points per game, 5 rebounds and 5.3 assists.
She has started 65 of 67 games in high school and won the most-valuable-player award this year.
Ms. Davis was named District 16 Player of the Year and was on the All-Ohio Dream Team this year. She has earned all-state first team and all-conference first team honors.
She lives in Springdale and is the daughter of Leavell and Nadine Davis.
To get a peek at what the next generation will produce in art, check out the display of student artists at the Knowledge Works Foundation, 700 Walnut St., suite 600.
The public may view the display from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, through August.
Young people should celebrate their own artistic creativity, said Chad Wick, president and CEO of the Knowledge Works Foundation.
About 100 works of art are on display, featuring pieces from students from the Regional Scholastic Art Competition and from Schiel Primary School for Arts Enrichment Program.
