MORROW A Morrow Elementary School student will represent his classmates when he goes to Washington on June 24 to accept an energy award at the Department of the Interior.
Tyler Dunbar, who designed a T-shirt for Picture Yourself in an Energy Smart Ohio campaign, and his classmates were awarded the first-place primary award for Ohio and best primary project nationally.
Students in grades 1-3 have been working on a variety of activities for the Ohio Energy Project. The children directed an energy video which was presented to the kindergarten class, held an Energy Fair and developed Energy Saving Tips for flyers which were displayed at the Salem Township Library in Morrow.
They also decorated grocery bags, displaying pictures and recycling ideas for Vitale's Super Value in Morrow.
Linda Olinger, first-grade teacher at Morrow Elementary, said the school became involved in the project following a luncheon in Columbus, where elementary students from throughout the state were participating in an energy bookmark contest.
She thought the project would be a good opportunity for children to learn how to work together on a project while strengthening reading, writing, math and science skills.
The trip, sponsored by the National Energy Education Department, will give the students the chance to meet children from across the country to share energy ideas. The group will also tour Washington and cruise the Potomac River.
Tyler will be accompanied by one of his parents along with faculty members Karen Dumais, Christi McEntire, Mrs. Olinger, Lori Mosgrove and Judy Burkhart.
