School board to appeal 10 Commandments order
The Associated Press
WEST UNION, Ohio A school board voted Thursday night to appeal a federal court ruling that ordered the board to remove stone tablets displaying the Ten Commandments from public schools.
The five members of the Adams County/Ohio Valley School District board voted unanimously for the appeal, Superintendent Roy Hill said. The board's vote authorizes its lawyers to appeal to the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati.
The Adams County Ministerial Association, which donated the stone tablets to the school district, had urged the board to challenge the court's ruling.
The Rev. Ken Johnson, a member of the association, said Thursday night that he and the other ministers were very pleased with the board's decision.
U.S. Magistrate Timothy Hogan in Cincinnati ruled last week that the 3-foot-tall stone tablets must be removed from the county's four high schools because they appear to be a government endorsement of religion. The tablets have been on display at the schools since 1997
