Police seek man who robbed Firstar bank
Cincinnati Police are searching for a man who held up the Firstar Bank at 6240 Glenway Ave., Covedale, Saturday morning.
Investigators say the man entered the bank at 10:18 a.m. before flashing a gun at a teller and demanding money. The man left with an undisclosed amount of money and was last seen exiting the rear door of the bank.
Police describe the man as black, 5 feet 9 inches, 25-28 years old, about 170 pounds with a close-cropped Afro and a paper thin mustache.
He was last seen wearing a bright orange T-shirt with writing on it, blue jeans and a ball cap.
This is the 20th bank robbery in the city in 2002.
Anyone with information is asked to call 352-3542 or Crime Stoppers at 352-3040. Callers can remain anonymous and may receive compensation for their information.
Conservatory closing while glass is replaced
The Krohn Conservatory will close for the summer beginning Monday as glass is being replaced in the Krohn's Tropical Room.
Ruth Ann Spears, manager of the Krohn, said for safety reasons the conservatory, located in Eden Park, will be closed until Sept. 6.
The $350,000 reglazing project is being done by Rough Brothers Inc. of St. Bernard.
We'll open up to the public Sept. 6 even if they're not done, Ms. Spears said. They have until Sept. 21 to complete the project.
She said the work involves erecting scaffolding around that part of the building.
The gift shop at Krohn will reopen at Tower Place, downtown, for July and August. Today is the last day for Krohn's butterfly show.
Northside man still in hospital after fire
A Northside man critically injured in a fire Friday afternoon has been identified as Robert Haile, 48, according to a nursing supervisor at University Hospital.
Mr. Haile remained in critical condition Saturday in the hospital's burn unit.
He was injured when a fire ripped though a group home in the 1500 block of Chase Avenue. Mr. Haile was walking out of the home on fire when firefighters arrived.
Five people live in the home, but only three were there when the fire started. No other residents were injured.
The fire caused about $100,000 worth of damage to the house and minor damage to a neighboring home.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Force catches man meeting "teen' online
GREEN TOWNSHIP A Colerain Township man was arrested Friday night after arranging a meeting with someone he thought was a 14-year-old girl.
David C. Slagle, 29, of the 6000 block of Sheed Road was charged with one count of attempted sexual contact with a minor and three counts of importuning. He was arraigned Saturday.
The charges stem from conversations in Internet chat rooms with an undercover officer. The investigator from the Regional Electronic and Computer Investigations task force posed as a 14-year-old female.
Mr. Slagle had been talking to the investigator since March, and arranged to meet the 14-year-old female for a sexual encounter. He was arrested shortly after arriving in the designated meeting spot on the corner of Greenway and Woodhaven.
The task force investigates cases where a computer is used to perpetrate the crime. The force is made up of officers from the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department, Cincinnati Police Department and the U.S. Post Office.
Man charged with rape, domestic violence
COLERAIN TOWNSHIP A 20-year-old Colerain Township man was arrested after an investigation into a sexual assault incident with his live-in girlfriend.
Orsy Flores of the 2700 block of Town Terrace Drive was charged with one count of rape and domestic violence. The charges stem from an incident on June 20 at their residence.
The 25-year-old victim said she was struck several times by Mr. Flores. She also accused him of sexually assaulting her.
Mr. Flores was arrested by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department and arraigned Saturday.
Law associations take award nominations
The Black Lawyers Association of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Bar Association are accepting nominations for the 2002 BLAC-CBA Round Table Forward Together Award. The award is given to individuals and organizations that foster diversity, inclusion, opportunity and leadership for minorities within the legal community. The award categories are individual, law firm, corporation, educator and public institution. The deadline is July 19.
