Enquirer Page Two power rankings

Enquirer staff

        Thumbs up

        1. Steve Logan. He's been proving people wrong his entire basketball career, but the NBA will be his ultimate challenge. There aren't many 5-foot-10 points guards — or players period — in the league anymore, but don't sell Logan short.

        2. St. Louis fans. The deaths of Jack Buck and Darryl Kile sadly put the baseball world's spotlight on this town and its fans. And the outpouring for the two has been amazing. It's about the best baseball town around.

        3. Cincinnati fans. Well, okay, attendance isn't what it is in St. Louis. But judging by the whining and complaining about the Reds this season, there are still a whole lot of fans that care. We think.

        4. Taylor Metcalfe. His run to the semifinals of the Metropolitan Amateur Championship scored one for the vets.

        5. John McEnroe. Gotta love the guy. Now he's stirring up trouble with his book, You Cannot Be Serious.

Thumbs down

               1. Cleveland Indians fans. Welcome to the real world. It was pretty easy packing The Jake while you were punishing the dreadful AL Central. But now that the rebuilding has begun, let's see how rockin' the ol' ballpark gets.

        2. Phil Mickleson and Sergio Garcia. Funny how they each won events the week after the U.S. Open. Events, by the way, that were Tigerless. C'mon fellas — regroup and make a run at the kid in the British Open.

        3. Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi and Marat Safin. Boy, guys, we barely had a reason to watch the men's draw at Wimbledon before you all tanked it. Maybe Tim Henman can make a run to help the Brits get over their loss in the World Cup.

        4. Good ol' college athletics. UK gets three years probation for violations while Hal Mumme was football coach. But of course, Southeastern Louisiana comes along and figures he's the perfect guy to build a program.

        5. Joe Torre. The Yankees skipper says he won't take any pitchers on the AL All-Star team that won't be able to pitch in the game. That's silly. If a guy deserves to be and All-Star, he deserves to be on the team.
