Doctor jailed on felony drug charges

Allegedly gave painkillers to ex-girlfriend

By Jim Hannah, jhannah@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

BURLINGTON — Police accuse a former Nashville plastic surgeon of supplying his ex-girlfriend with painkillers when the couple lived together in Walton.

Dr. Christ Pete Koulis, 34, is being held at the Boone County jail in lieu of a $200,000 cash bond. He is facing numerous felony drug charges, including traffic and illegal dispensing of a controlled substance.

Maj. Jack Banks, spokesman for the Boone County Sheriff's Department, said authorities became suspicious of Dr. Koulis in April when his former girlfriend showed up at the emergency room of St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. During the course of treatment for an infection, Major Banks said it was alleged Dr. Koulis had been injecting the woman with controlled substances.

The drugs included Ketamine, Demerol and morphine.

Maj. Banks didn't know the whereabouts of the former girlfriend, Lesa R. Buchanan of the Walton area.

U.S. Customs Service officers arrested Dr. Koulis on an outstanding warrant issued in Boone County. He was picked up by the federal agents as he stepped off a flight from Jamaica on June 18. Dr. Koulis was brought back to Boone County on Thursday.

Among the 20 charges Dr. Koulis faces are four counts of unlawful prescribing, administering, dispensing or distributing of a controlled substance.

Dr. Koulis was not registered to practice medicine in Kentucky, and Maj. Banks doesn't believe the doctor had a full-time job when he was arrested.

From July 1997 to June 1999, Dr. Koulis practiced plastic surgery at Vanderbilt Medical Center. He once held staff privileges at three other Nashville-area hospitals.

The Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners suspended Dr. Koulis' medical license May 2
