Lone Star Sky stuns Posse at Churchill
The Cincinnati Enquirer
LOUISVILLE Lone Star Sky, ridden by Mark Guidry, caught favorite Posse in the final furlong and won the Bashford Manor for 2-year-olds by 3 1/4 lengths on closing day of the Churchill Downs spring meeting.
Lone Star Sky covered the six furlongs in a stakes-record 1:09.68 and paid $9.40 to win.
I've never won a 2-year-old race of this caliber, trainer Tom Amoss said. "It's exciting. I'm not sure what we'll do, other than hope we have him in Chicago for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile in October.
Amoss tied Dale Romans for meet-leading trainer with 23 wins. Pat Day, 48, won his 15th spring meet riding title with 72 wins.
RIVER DOWNS: Odds-on favorite Joanies Bella, ridden by Jeff Johnston, won the Cincinnatian Stakes for 3-year-olds fillies on the turf course. She won the Pepsi Bassinet Stakes last year, was Ohio-bred juvenile filly champion and finished runner-up to Harlan's Holiday for Ohio Horse of the Year.
BELMONT PARK: Gygistar held off a late charge from Nothing Flat and won the Dwyer Stakes.
WAR EMBLEM UPDATE: Trainer Bob Baffert said Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner War Emblem will make his return in the Haskell Invitational Aug. 4 at Monmouth Park.
JOCKEY RECORD: Mario Pino set a Colonial Downs record by winning a career-best seven races.
