Semipro football player dies of head injury

The Associated Press

UTICA, N.Y. — A semipro football player died after colliding with another player during a weekend New York Amateur Football League game.

Maurice Williams, a 23-year-old father of two, was pronounced dead at 10 p.m. Saturday at Rome Memorial Hospital. He died of a massive head injury, Oneida County Coroner Kevin Barry said Sunday.

Williams, who played cornerback and returned kicks for the Central New York Express, went to the sidelines during Saturday night's game and told medical personnel he was involved in a helmet-to-helmet hit.

“He got up and sustained for a while, and then he collapsed,” Barry said. “The one guy's fatally injured and the other guy is not injured at all. It's strange.”

Team general manager and league president Greg Portzline said Williams remained in the game and played in a few more plays before collapsing on the sidelines.
