The Cincinnati Enquirer

KENWOOD — David J. Workum, retired sales manager for the Clopay Corp. and former volunteer for Wyoming schools, died of cancer Saturday at his summer home in Leland, Mich. He was 73.

Mr. Workum, who also had homes in Kenwood and Vero Beach, Fla., left a legacy of community service at all three places.

He was a member of the citizen's advisory committee for the Wyoming School District and campaign manager for many of the district's levies.

He was also a member of Wyoming Youth Guidance and Big Brothers Association, participated in the Business Adopt a School Program through his employer and was a coach for Khoury League softball.

Mr. Workum was recently called a “quiet pillar in the community,” by the Press Journal, a newspaper in Vero Beach.

A fifth-generation Cincinnatian, Mr. Workum was a graduate of Walnut Hills High School and Miami University. He served as a lieutenant with the Air Force during the Korean War.

In 1954 he became a salesman for Clopay and was national sales manager when he retired in 1991.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Linda Workum Shad of Terrace Park, Debbi Workum of Pleasant Ridge and Elli Workum of Louisville; a son, David J. of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; a brother, Lee J. of Wyoming; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service is 2 p.m. Friday at Leland Community United Methodist Church in Leland. Burial will be in Leland. Memorials: Leelanau Conservancy, P.O. Box 1007, Leland, Mich. 49654; or the American Cancer Society, 11117 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati 45242.
