Dam work delays boats up to 30 hours

Towboats are facing up to a 30-hour wait before getting through the Meldahl Dam in Felicity.
Maintenance to the dam's 1,200-foot main chamber is rerouting all traffic to the 600-foot auxiliary chamber. As of Saturday evening, 25 boats were still waiting to get through either upstream or downstream.
Each tow has to be broken in half and taken in two sections, said Jim Noble, lockmaster with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Most of the folks know that they can't get through. The only ones that are going through the lock right now are those that are traveling and going long distances.
To help keep traffic moving, the Corps is limiting pleasure boat passage to noon-4 p.m. daily.
The main chamber has been drained so Corps personnel can work on the main gates. Routine maintenance like this is done about every 10 to 15 years.
Work on the dam, which is located about 30 miles east of downtown Cincinnati along State Route 52, began June 17 and and is scheduled to be completed by July 26.
When we first started out, Mr. Noble said, we didn't have that much delay time. But every day we're shut down, it increases.
