Hitesh Patel, the owner of Jiffy's Convenience Mart in Fairfield, said Friday was the busiest sales day in his store's five-year history, thanks to the $138million Mega Millions jackpot.
This week, Mr. Patel may need to keep his store open late again. Because there was no winner in Friday's draw, the treasure chest is expected to grow to $165 million for Tuesday's 11 p.m. drawing.
Next week people will go more crazy, he said. We had people coming in until the last moment Friday, so the store remained open a half-hour past its normal 10 p.m. close.
People are spending money, he said. They are so happy for Mega Millions.
Mega Millions, which includes nine states, arrived in Ohio in May. The lottery, as The Big Game, offered the largest jackpot in North American history in 2000, a $363 million prize.
Bruce Egbert, owner of Ameristop Food Mart in North College Hill, said Mega Millions and other lottery sales accounted for more than 50 percent of his sales Friday.
We have people coming in buying $10, $20 and some spend $100, he said. It brings money in, so we don't complain about it.
Friday's winning numbers were 13, 19, 23, 38, 47 and the Mega Ball was 15. No one matched them all, but there were 13 second-prize winners, who won $175,000 by matching five numbers but not the Mega Ball.
