Two firefighters injured in floor collapse
MIDDLETOWN - Two firefighters were injured Saturday while battling flames that destroyed a single-family home on Clark Street and caused its floor to collapse.
The blaze began in the basement at 701 Clark St. shortly before 7 a.m. before creeping up the two-level home's walls and spreading to the attic, Middletown Fire Deputy Chief Lyle Easter said.
The first-story floor collapsed on firefighters Todd Wissemeier and Steve Riley while they were combating flames in the basement. They were transported to Middletown Regional Hospital, where they were treated and released.
Mr. Wissemeier's vertebrae was fractured. Mr. Riley will undergo additional X-rays to determine whether he fractured his wrist.
Damage to the house totaled $120,000, including $35,000 in contents. The blaze's cause is under investigation, Chief Easter said.
