LeBron's mentor faces jail time for leaving state

The Associated Press

AKRON, Ohio — The father figure to high school basketball star LeBron James could end up in jail next week for accompanying James to a basketball camp in New Jersey.

A Summit County judge will consider revoking Eddie Jackson Jr.'s bond because he was ordered not to leave Ohio after he was charged June 19 with 35 counts of engaging in corrupt activity, tampering with records, forgery and money laundering.

Prosecutors have accused Jackson in a mortgage fraud in which 14 properties appraised through a mortgage brokerage he created resulted in inflated sale prices.

A hearing is set for Wednesday before Judge Ted Schneiderman. The judge saw a story in The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer that reported Jackson accompanied James, 17, to the Adidas ABCD high school all-star basketball camp July 10.

“We are always concerned when a defendant leaves the state when he's not permitted to do so as a condition of his bond,” Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh said.

Schneiderman earlier refused to let Jackson travel to Chicago when James was treated for a broken wrist.

Jackson declined to comment on Saturday. Jackson's attorneys declined to comment.

Jackson is involved in James' life as a mentor although he is not his father. James' mother, Gloria James, has described Jackson as LeBron's father, saying the boy's biological father has never been involved in his life.

James, Ohio's Mr. Basketball the past two years, has been on the cover of Sports Illustrated, which dubbed the 17-year-old “The Chosen One.”

He will be a senior this fall at Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School and is expected to be a top NBA draft pick if he decides to skip college and turn pro.
