Obituary: Carol Ann Gabelman, aided kids

She helped run Kelly's Foundation

By Rebecca Billman, rbillman@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Carol Ann Gabelman spent her days tending to the needs of families who have children battling cancer. She worked for Kelly's Foundation for Children, an organization established by her family last year to honor the memory of a relative who died of leukemia.

In her role as family service coordinator, Mrs. Gabelman might negotiate with a landlord to prevent a family's eviction. Another day she might acquire tires for a family car so members could safely take a child to the hospital.

She tackled whatever problems the families faced — so that they might focus on their children's recovery.

Mrs. Gabelman, 39, died Sunday after being hit by a boat while swimming in Michigan. The Mount Washington resident was vacationing with two of her children at the family's cottage in Sheboygan.

Born Carol Ann Conrad in Toledo in 1962, she was the daughter of Edward J. and Suzanne Malloy Conrad.

Mrs. Gabelman won many swimming awards in her hometown. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy and went on to the University of Cincinnati, receiving a bachelor's degree in nursing in 1984. She worked as an intensive-care nurse in trauma units at University Hospital.

She married Thomas L. Gabelman in 1985, and the couple had three children.

Besides her husband and parents, who live in Toledo, survivors include her children, Kevin Thomas, Megan Michelle and Ryan Michael; four brothers, Michael Conrad, James Conrad, Douglas Conrad and David

Conrad; and two sisters, Cathleen Opperman and Jennifer Swope.

Visitation is 4-9 p.m. Friday at Elden A. Good Funeral Home, 2620 Erie Ave., Hyde Park. Mass of Christian burial is 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Church, 2853 Erie Ave. in Hyde Park.

Memorials: Kelly's Foundation for Children, Suite 2100, Atrium Two, 221 E. Fourth St., Cincinnati 45202.
