Fund-raiser serves salon-on-wheels
Style extra
Salon support: Aveda/Frederic's Project Daymaker salon-on-wheels travels across four states providing hair cuts and shampoos for the needy. To keep the salon fueled and on the road, Aveda/Frederic's is planning a fund-raiser Aug. 7 as part of the Tennis Masters Series in Mason. A limited number of tickets 100 for the day session, 100 for the evening session, are available. For a $100 donation, you receive lunch or dinner, drinks, program and a ticket for tournament play on center court. The daytime tournament begins at 11 a.m., the evening at 7 p.m., with meals an hour before and an hour after court time. Information: 874-2226, Ext. 1113.
Wedding book: A display of vintage weddings gowns and current bridal fashions and catalogs from Queen Ann's Bridal shop will be part of best-selling author Kathleen Eagle's appearance at Books & Co. in Dayton at 7 p.m. Thursday. Like her heroine in Once Upon a Wedding (William Morrow & Co.; $24.95), Ms. Eagle's knowledge of American Indians comes from personal experience when she married her Lakota Sioux husband while teaching at a reservation. Her take on weddings and how they take on a life of their own comes from planning her daughter's big day. Books & Co. is at 350 E. Stroop Road. (937) 297-6358.
Gown preservation: Once the honeymoon is over, brides need to think about preserving that once-in-a-lifetime dress. Web sites with care tips include: Association of Wedding Gown Specialists at www.weddinggownspecialists.com; National Bridal Service at www.nationalbridalservice.com; Modern Bride magazine at www.modernbride.com; the Knot atwww.theknot.com.
Eye gels: Dozens of creams and masks claim to bring the bags down under your eyes after too much sun or too many margaritas. Many cost as much as a gourmet meal. One of the more pleasant-sounding methods is priced at a little more than a paperback book.
DuWops i-gels, ($20), are chilled, saucer-shaped gelatin eye compresses that conform to the shape of the eyes. Spend 10 minutes under them, and, according to directions, you should start to look and feel better. Blue i-gels have a lavender scent and contain chamomile to shrink swelling.
Yellows, with a grapefruit fragrance, contain vitamin K and arnica to relieve sinus pressure on an airplane and soften dark circles. Purple gels smell like wisteria and moisturize the skin around the eyes. They are available at Nordstrom stores and at www.duwoponline.com.
Vogue for teens: After four test issues, Vogue magazine will extend its reach to the teen market on a regular schedule as a bi-monthly publication, Teen Vogue, beginning February/March. The magazine, from Conde Naste Publications, with have a circulation base of 450,000, will be in the new Euro magazine size (6 3/4 by 9 inches) and will cost $1.50. The new publication will be aimed at sophisticated teens.
Make mine diamonds: TechnoMarine, the elite watch company known for colorful bands, faces and high-tech works, has taken its design up another notch with two glitzy timepieces heavy on the glam: the TechnoMarine Wave and the TechnoDiamond-TM Pave.
The Wave is an elegant swirl of 724 diamonds with a diamond face. If you can get beyond the diamonds, you'll notice quality precision Swiss movements and little extras: crocodile, alligator and black satin bands and extra gel straps, depending on the style.
The TM Pave has a rotating bezel covered with 136 full-cut diamonds arranged in a bead setting, as well as a diamond pave dial embedded with 143 full-cut diamonds. For those who dive in their diamonds, it's also water resistant to 660 feet. About $3,600 and up. at Hyde Park Jewelers, 3443 Edwards Road.
Patriotic cross stitch: On the 11th day of each month since Sept. 11, the Posy Collection's Posy Lough, who specializes in cross stitch kits for historic sites and museums, has posted on www.posycollection.com a cross stitch chart from the Remembrance series. This Sept. 11, she will release the final design with the New York skyline with the Twin Towers and the words United We Stand.
