Phillip Whaley, 36, of Wilder, wanted on warrants in Fort Thomas, and Boone and Campbell counties in Kentucky and Clermont County in Ohio, was hospitalized Tuesday night after jumping from a second second-story window while handcuffed at the Versailles Police Department.
Mr. Whaley was sought since last Friday in connection with burglaries of five Forth Thomas homes. He is suspected of stealing a Dodge Stratus before fleeing to Cincinnati, where he was thought to be hiding out in Clifton.
Mr. Whaley, a Desert Shield veteran who police say has a drug problem, allegedly grabbed an elderly woman Tuesday in front of Cable's Furniture and Appliance Store in Versailles at 10:30 a.m., held a knife to her throat and walked into the store demanding to speak with a police negotiator, said store employee Michael O'Neal.
She was screaming. "Please let me go, please let me go,' he said.
When police arrived, Mr. Whaley released the woman, and police fired beanbag shots at him before arresting him about 90 minutes after the incident began, Mr. O'Neal said.
He was pretty frantic, he said. You could tell he was pretty nervous and scared.
Versailles police Detective Matt Mitchell said he was not sure of Mr. Whaley's condition Tuesday night.
He said Mr. Whaley would be charged with kidnapping and making terroristic threats.
Mr. Whaley will be charged in Fort Thomas with first-degree burglary, unlawful possession of a firearm and failure to appear in court on a charge of cocaine possession.
Police from 11 agencies used dogs and a helicopter last week to search for Mr. Whaley.
He is also wanted in connection with a hit-and-run accident early Friday morning in Cincinnati, the theft of a Glock .45-caliber handgun from a Hebron residence July 17 last Wednesday and a Clermont County theft in March.
