A Crime Stoppers tip on a suspected bank robber Tuesday ended with the wanted man in the hospital after a struggle with a Cincinnati police officer.
The caller told police a little before 9:30 a.m. that McKinley Barnwell, 49, of Avondale was at Elder and Elm streets in Over-the-Rhine. He had been wanted since June 6 in the armed robbery of a Bank One in Springdale in November.
Officers responded to the intersection and saw Mr. Barnwell, who fled. Officers, who were told he had used a gun in the bank robbery, ran after him. Officer Norm Luttrell, a seven-year veteran of the force, hit Mr. Barnwell with his baton, knocking him to the ground. Mr. Barnwell suffered a head injury and was taken to University Hospital.
The use of force will be investigated, said police spokesman Lt. Kurt Byrd. The department's Criminal Investigations Section gets involved whenever a force incident results in hospitalization.
Officers are not trained to use their batons on people's heads, but Lt. Byrd said some situations cannot be predicted. Investigators did not yet know later Tuesday all the details of how Mr. Barnwell was hit.
He also said personnel at University knew Mr. Barnwell and told police he has a history of high blood pressure and seizures.
Mr. Barnwell was sent to prison in 2000 for selling heroin to a police informant.
