Smart mouth

You heard it here first

Just In

Good news for guys who cook from the results of the “Food in America” poll featured in the August issue of Food & Wine. More than half of the respondents said a “man who cooks is sexy,” while only 25 percent found a woman who cooks is “sexy.” Also in the latest issue: The best American chardonnays and spicy recipes with a kick. $3.95.

Quick — before the players go on strike, check out baseball-inspired recipes from Greater Cincinnati chefs Roy Ketchum of J's Fresh Seafood in Hyde Park, Jean-Paul Cassy of Allyn's Cafe in Columbia Tusculum and Rick Potter of Stringtown Restaurant in Florence. For copies of the recipes, e-mail ButterballChickenRecipes@domus1.com or write Butterball Chicken Recipes, 123 Ave. of the Arts, Suite 1980, Philadelphia, PA 19109.

        Pattypan squash
is a small, round, yellow or green summer squash with scalloped edges, which is why it is sometimes called “scalloped” squash. Slice and saute pattypans, steam or roast them whole, or hollow and stuff for baking. No need to remove the tender skin. Choose pattypans with bright-colored skin and no bruises. Refrigerate in a plastic bag no longer than five days.

Sip It

Hugel “Gentil” 2000 ($10): With its hint of citrus, this dry white is great for sipping on a steamy summer night, on the patio or before dinner. Made by one of the best-known Alsatian producers, the Hugel “Gentil” is a blend of five varietals: gewurztraminer, riesling, sylvaner, pinot gris and muscat.
