Pete AND a bobblehead? Watta deal

Toys should assure sellout of softball game

By Dan Klepal, dklepal@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Buy a ticket, get a Pete Rose bobblehead.

Tickets for the softball game between former Reds greats and other retired Major League Baseball all-stars go on sale Saturday for $30 (green, blue and yellow sections), $20 (red section) and a family four-pack for $59 (last six rows of the red section).

The event, billed as the “Farewell to Riverfront/Cinergy Field Game,” will be Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. at Cinergy Field. The game will be preceded by free autograph signings, a three-inning local celebrity softball game and a softball home-run contest. It will be played the day after this year's Reds play their final regular-season home game at Cinergy Field.

Fans who buy a ticket will get a Pete Rose bobblehead doll.

“We think this bobblehead more or less seals the sellout,” said Marty Garafalo, president of the company organizing the event.

At a press conference two weeks ago, Mr. Rose guaranteed a great show.

“We're going to send Cinergy Field out with a bang as far as entertaining fans,” Mr. Rose said. “We've got a good array of talent, and it'll be a fun game.”

Big Red Machine-era players such as Mr. Rose, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan and George Foster will play against such former Major Leaguers as Mike Schmidt, Ozzie Smith and Steve Garvey. Players from the 1980s and the 1990 World Champion teams also will be invited.

Tickets can be purchased at all Tickets.com retail outlets, Meijer stores, the Fifth Third Visitor Center at Fountain Square, Hader Hardware and Play It Again Sports. They also can be charged by phone at (800) 955-5566. Family four-pack tickets are available only at Meijer.
