Monsignor Henry John Vogelpohl, known as Uncle Henry and Uncle Buck to loved ones, cherished family gatherings that could include as many as 36 nieces and nephews.
He was dearly loved by all his family, said one of his nephews, the Rev. Harry Meyer of St. Susanna Church in Mason. He loved to be with priests and with people. He had an absolute marvelous sense of humor.
Monsignor Vogelpohl died Wednesday 1 at Bayley Place in Delhi Township after a long illness. He was 89.
A native of Cincinnati, Monsignor Vogelpohl lived as a child in Cumminsville, Mount Healthy and Price Hill.
He studied at St. Gregory and Mount St. Mary of the West seminaries and received his bachelor's degree from the Athenaeum of Ohio. In 1939, he was ordained to the priesthood by then-Archbishop John T. McNicholas and said his first Mass at St. Lawrence Church in Price Hill.
That same year, Monsignor Vogelpohl was appointed a teacher at Elder High School in Price Hill and became a band moderator. In 1942, he served as assistant chancellor at St. Louis Church, downtown, and the next year was associate pastor.
He received his doctorate in canon law from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., in 1945 and was appointed vice chancellor and instructor of canon law at Mount St. Mary's Seminary. He was also appointed Defender of the Bond of the Tribunal.
He was raised to papal chamberlain in 1949 with the title monsignor and named vice officialis of the tribunal in 1950. During these years, he was still serving as associate pastor of St. Louis Church.
In 1958, Monsignor Vogelpohl was appointed chancellor and was a member of the administrative council of the Athenaeum. In 1959 he served on the Archdiocesan Council, the Board on Temporal Affairs of Seminaries and the Archdiocesan School Board.
He was pastor of St. Louis Church from 1966 to 1973. Additionally, he was appointed vice chairman of the school board in 1969.
Before his retirement in 1983, he served as pastor of Our Lady of Visitation Church in Mack. In retirement, he became the associate in residence at St. Jude Church in Bridgetown.
Survivors are brothers Raymond of Green Township and Jack of Seal Beach, Calif., and sisters Rita Meyer and Mary Ann Frye of Cincinnati.
