Bucks deal Robinson to improvement-minded Hawks
Kukoc, Leon Smith join Milwaukee; Atlanta tries to bolster front line
Enquirer staff and news services
ATLANTA - The Milwaukee Bucks traded forward Glenn Robinson to the Atlanta Hawks on Friday for forwards Toni Kukoc and Leon Smith and a first-round draft choice in 2003.
Robinson, part of an underachieving team that missed the playoffs last season, joins a club that has had a losing record for four straight seasons. But Hawks management has guaranteed the team will make the playoffs this year, promising a partial refund to season-ticket holders if the team doesn't make it.
Robinson will play small forward on a front line that includes Shareef Abdur-Rahim and former league shot-block leader Theo Ratliff, who has been injured for most of the past two seasons.
It's extremely exciting to add a player of Glenn's capabilities, Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said in a statement. He's one of the premier offensive players in the league and I think his abilities will mesh well with Shareef and Theo.
The Bucks missed the playoffs, and players often bickered with coach George Karl. The trade means Milwaukee has broken up its big three of Robinson, Ray Allen and Sam Cassell, who led the team to the Eastern Conference finals two years ago.
Robinson was the No.1 overall pick in 1994 out of Purdue.
Kukoc, 33, missed much of last season with injuries.
Smith, a 6-foot-10 center-forward, was signed by Atlanta in March, after playing out two 10-day contracts with the team and a stint in the CBA. He was drafted by Dallas out of high school in 1999 but has a troubled personal history.
CAVALIERS: After Tuesday's trade sent Andre Miller, a Los Angeles native, to the Clippers, the Cavaliers are desperate for a point guard. Antonio Daniels, a Columbus native who starred at Bowling Green, tops their list.
Daniels has one year remaining on his contract with San Antonio. But the Spurs, overloaded in the backcourt, have let him know he could be dealt.
Daniels, who has played the past four seasons with the Spurs, said his first preference is to remain in San Antonio. If he is traded, Daniels, whose mother, Alice, still lives in Columbus, wouldn't mind going to the Cavs.
It would be good to go back close to home and play, said Daniels, who averaged 9.2 points and 2.8 assists last season. I've heard that Cleveland is one of the teams that's looking at me. The only thing is, I haven't been in cold weather since leaving Bowling Green (in 1997).
Other teams known to be in the mix for Daniels are Boston, Miami and Minnesota. Of the four, Daniels says he prefers one, but he wouldn't reveal that team.
