McKay's fast start gives her early lead in Wendy's event

Irwin tops field in Long Island with 7-under 64

The Associated Press

DUBLIN, Ohio - Playing her first five holes at 5-under par, Mhairi McKay shot a 65 to take a one-stroke lead over Rosie Jones through Friday's opening round of the Wendy's Championship for Children.

Starting her afternoon round on the 10th tee, McKay parred the first hole and then had a birdie, birdie, eagle and birdie on the next four holes to grab a share of the lead with Futures Tour veteran Michele Vinieratos.

McKay rolled in a 22-foot birdie putt at No.11, hit a sand wedge to 10 feet at No.12 and her 3-wood second shot on the par-5 13th came to rest 10 feet from the hole. After the eagle putt, she hit a wedge to 15 feet on the next hole for a birdie.

She barely missed birdie putts on the next three holes.

She added two more birdies for a 7-under 65 that matched her low round on the LPGA Tour this year.

Many of the top players skipped the Wendy's tournament to prepare for next week's final major championship of the year, the Weetabix Women's British Open. The missing players include seven of the tour's top 10 money-winners.

Players had to contend with temperatures near 100 degrees with high humidity and little wind.

Jones, a former Ohio State golfer, was tied with McKay for the lead before bogeying her 15th hole of the day. Fighting a lingering head cold, Jones had difficulty remembering shots and distances from her round.

But she closed her round by blasting out of a greenside bunker to 5 feet of the hole on the par-5 ninth hole, then hitting the birdie putt take second place by herself.

Vinieratos, playing in the third group off the tee in the morning, posted her lowest LPGA round, making seven birdies and two bogeys.

        Twelve-year-old amateur Michelle Wie shot a 77.

Defending champion Wendy Ward shot a 72, one shot better than reigning U.S. Open champion Juli Inkster's 73.

SENIOR TOUR: Hale Irwin had seven birdies over the final 12 holes and shot a 7-under-par 64 to take a one-stroke lead over Gil Morgan after the opening round of the Long Island Classic at Jericho, N.Y.

Irwin, who has 34 wins in his eight seasons on the Senior PGA Tour and leads the money list this year, “tweaked” his stance last week and it paid immediate dividends.

Morgan, who parred the final five holes at the 6,840-yard Meadow Brook Club course, best summed up the hot (91 degrees) and humid (55 percent) conditions that saw the heat index reach the upper 90s.

“You had to drink a lot of fluids and hunt the shade,” said Morgan, whose only win this year came at the BellSouth Classic in June. “The golf course was very receptive.”

Five golfers, including Bruce Fleisher, who has won this event two of the last three years, and Lee Trevino, were at 66.

WESTERN AMATEUR: Andrew Buckle shot a 5-under-par 66 to move into a tie for the lead with Kevin Stadler in Benton Harbor, Mich.

Stadler, of Englewood, Calif., finished with a 1-under-par 70 Thursday to hold a share of the lead with Buckle at 9-under-par 133 for 36 holes at Point O'Woods Golf and Country Club.

Stadler, 22, son son of PGA star Craig Stadler, started the day four shots in front of the 19-year-old Buckle. They have been paired for the tournament and will play together again Friday.

SCANDINAVIAN: Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell shot a course record 7-under-par 64 for a one-stroke lead after the opening round . McDowell, the top-ranked college golfer in the United States this past year, beat the previous Kungsangen record by a stroke.
