Suspect in shooting of Ky. trooper dead
The Associated Press
MORGANTOWN, Ky. - A 56-year-old man suspected of shooting a Kentucky State Police trooper in Butler County was found dead inside a house, authorities said.
Kentucky State Police identified the man as Lemuel Garrison, of rural Butler County. Spokeswoman Lt. Lisa Rudzinski said forensic tests will be conducted to determine if he was shot by officers or if he shot himself.
State police in Bowling Green received a call Saturday afternoon from a woman asking the police to check on her son.
She had gone by the residence and he never came to the door, Lt. Rudzinski said. There was a lot of mail in his mailbox and a check.
Two troopers, Todd Holder, 37, and Jaman Childers, 29, were dispatched to the residence on Leonard Oak Road in the northeastern part of the county, authorities said. A Butler County deputy, Randall Martin, was also at the scene.
As the troopers were walking toward the house just before 4:30 p.m., someone from inside fired shots, wounding Officer Holder, said Trooper Nick Stephens.
More state police units then responded.
The suspect was barricaded inside the home for about three hours before a police Special Response Team went inside and found his body.
Officer Holder, a 12-year veteran with the state police, underwent surgery Saturday and was recovering at The Medical Center in Bowling Green.
His injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, said Lt. Rudzinski.
Officer Holder and Officer Childers will be placed on administrative leave with pay, pending a review of the shooting, Trooper Stephens said.
