Some Good News

Church exceeds fund goal

map
When Don Hoffman, chairman of a fund drive to raise about $3 million needed for a $4.5 million expansion of Wyoming Presbyterian Church, began, he had no idea he could raise that much and more in six weeks.

“We exceeded our goal,” Mr. Hoffman said. “We had about 150 members who came together, organized and campaigned among friends and relatives. We have raised $3.732 million in six weeks.”

He said all of the contributions came from individuals and none from corporations. The remainder of the money needed for the addition will come from the church endowment fund, Mr. Hoffman said.

“We have about 900 members, and 87 percent of the cost of the new addition is coming from the fund drive,” he said.

Construction on the new addition should start in late August or early September, Mr. Hoffman said.

The proposed addition has cleared the planning commission and City Council. Next step is to get a building permit, Mr. Hoffman said.

He said the addition will include space for youth activities, choirs, social rooms, a computer room, a telecommunication area, teen cafi and nursing school.

The 130-year-old church was designed by 19th century architect Samuel Hannaford and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

“It is a typical community church where 90 percent of the membership lives in Wyoming,” Mr. Hoffman said.

The Urban League of Greater Cincinnati has received a $3,000 grant for its Sickle Cell Awareness program.

The grant came from the Jon Deitloff Funeral Centre, 4389 Spring Grove Ave., Winton Place.

The Urban League became the parent organization of Sickle Cell this year through United Way to enhance a program already in place to serve children and adults stricken with the disease.
