COVINGTON A jury deliberated less than an hour before finding a Covington man guilty of federal drug charges.
Donnell Ballard, 27, of Covington was found guilty of two counts of possession with the intent to distribute crack cocaine after a two-day trial that ended Tuesday.
More than 20 officers from the FBI Safe Street Task Force, the Covington SWAT Team and the Covington Police Department Crime Suppression Unit raided Mr. Ballard's apartment on Nov. 7, after receiving numerous complaints from neighbors.
Confiscated as evidence were 3 to 4 ounces of crack cocaine, one Glock .45 caliber handgun, five loaded AK-47 magazines, $633 in cash, and cameras and monitors, Covington Police said.
In addition to Mr. Ballard, four other people were at the apartment when the raid occurred. Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura Voorhees said agents also found about 78 grams of crack, valued at $15,000, and two semi-automatic weapons hidden in the back yard of a home on 13th Street in Covington.
This was actually more elaborate than other (suspected drug-trafficking operations) we've run into, because of the (security) cameras and monitors, said Covington Police spokesman Lt. Col. Jim Liles.
Mr. Ballard is scheduled to be sentenced in U.S. District Court in Covington on Oct. 21.
Federal prosecutors said they anticipate he will be sentenced to 14 years in federal prison.
